The pond built as part of the LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN project, at the Oliveira Community Garden (Porto) has been improved

The Municipality of Porto took advantage of its participation in the MoRe Porto project to expand the pond that collects water from the green roofs of the Falcão Primary School.

Besides the pond effect, it was restored to include also the effect of water retention and infiltration basin. Thus, the deepest part is watertight, which ensures that water remains during the drier months, and the upper levels are permeable, to infiltrate surplus water into the aquifers.

The pond’s biodiversity has also been strengthened. In terms of flora, emergent aquatic plants (e.g. Iris pseudacorus and Lysimachia vulgaris) and floating plants (e.g. Nymphoides peltata and Potamogeton crispus) were installed. Once the habitat was recreated, two species of amphibians were reintroduced: iberian waterfrog (Pelophylax perezi) and common midwife toad (Alytes obstreticans). Next spring will bring a new reinforcement, with more amphibian species being introduced in this habitat.

MoRe Porto – Monitoring and Ecological Restoration of Small Wetlands in Porto – is a project promoted by the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), funded by the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation and with Porto City Council as its main strategic partner.
