We define Nature Based Solutions (NBS) for society’s challenges as nature-inspired, nature-backed solutions that are cost-effective while providing environmental, social, and economic benefits and helping to build resilience to climate change. These solutions bring more diverse natural features and processes to cities, landscapes and marine landscapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions.
The main objectives of the EU R&D policy agenda for nature-based solutions and renaissance cities are:
- Improve framework conditions for nature-based solutions at EU policy level.
- Develop a European Research and Innovation Community for nature-based solutions.
- Provide evidence and knowledge base for nature-based solutions.
- Advance the development, acceptance and improvement of innovative nature-based solutions.
Integrate NBS into the international R&D agenda.
