Proposals for improving hygrothermal comfort and adaptation to climate change at the International Seminar on Lighting and Sustainability 2022

IETcc-CSIC, partner of the LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN project, gave a presentation on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and the LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN experience at the International Seminar on Lighting and Sustainability 2022 organised by the Metropolitan Research Laboratory of the Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico.

The presentation was divided into two parts. In the first part, Borja Frutos (IETcc-CSIC) shared an overview of the NBS concept and introduced the LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN project. In the second part, Arturo Martínez (IETcc-CSIC) addressed technical aspects of some of the NBS implemented and presented the progress of the project.

At the beginning, the NBS concept and its potential benefits for the urban environment and indoor spaces are defined. The usefulness of some of nature’s mechanisms for the climate adaptability of buildings is shown.

Then, the LIFE-myBUILDINGisGREEN project is introduced, mentioning the type of project, duration, budget and partners involved. It shows the problems that have given rise to the project, provides data on the increase of heatwave days in the Iberian Peninsula and talks about the low capacity of some buildings to cope with this climatic challenge. The general and specific objectives of the project are then set out and different NBS that have been implemented in one of the pilot buildings are shown.

In the second part of the presentation, the operation and characteristics of two of the most common types of NBS present in the project, roofs and green façades, and their different configurations are shown.

About the LIFE Project, the criteria for the selection of the case studies, the design processes of some of the NBS and the characteristics of the implemented prototypes are explained.

The “before and after” of the rehabilitation works in the Gabriela Mistral school in Solana de los Barros (Badajoz, Spain), is presented. The configuration of the vegetal parasols, the green roofs, the interior living wall and the rainwater recovery system are shown.

As a final part, the indicators used to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented NBS are shown, as well as the expected results at the end of the project
